In Chapter 3, the audience learns more about Jay Gatsby and the speculations that surround him. Nick feels very boastful upon having received an invitation to a Gatsby party, rather than just showing up like everybody else does. He gets so excited because it makes him feel special and wanted around such a wealthy and well-known individual even though Gatsby’s parties are usually an open house and anybody can come. Upon arrival, Nick hears a various amount of things about Jay Gatsby: “Somebody told me they thought he killed a man once.”, “it’s more that he was a German spy during the war.”. All of these prove that nobody really knows Gatsby. They only know his house or the parties that he throws. Parties were a big part of people’s lives in the 1920s. Because of the carefree and wealthy spirit of individuals , people wanted to have fun and look glamorous while doing it. Gatsby is kind of like a celebrity in the sense that nobody knows his true life. He is hidden by rumors and wealth and that is why Nick feels special when he gets the invitation or when he says Gatsby is beautiful.
