In Chapter 5, Gatsby actually approaches Nick about having him over for tea with Daisy. He offers Nick all of these favors in return for the deed, but Nick refuses them. He does holds the tea as a favor. Nick does this to prove to Gatsby that he could be a friend, rather than somebody who just uses Gatsby for money or other favors. However, when Gatsby offers Nick a position to work in his small business with Wolfshiem, Nick begins to question Gatsby’s life and secrets again.
It was interesting to see Daisy’s response when Nick invites her over. He tells her not to bring Tom with her and she says “Who is ‘Tom’?” She does that on purpose to make a joke, but it also shows that she doesn’t care enough to want to bring him along or question why he wasn’t invited as well. Gatsby is nervous and awkward for the meeting with Daisy and it shows that he is not as suave and smooth as he appears to be. After all the tension, Gatsby finds the meeting to be a mistake and wants to leave because he is humiliated and thinks Daisy is embarrassed. Nick encourages him to go back and leaves to let Gatsby and Daisy alone. When he returns, they are so invested in each other, it is like they picked up where they left off. The three leave to go to Gatsby’s mansion so that he could show Daisy his fortune. While in his room, Daisy cries and Gatsby explains to her that he never stopped loving her and that was why he bought the house. He tells her about the green light at the end of his dock and how it reminded him of her.
